  1. DISCOVERY OF URANUS: 1781

  3.    Barely visible to the naked eye, the seventh 
  4. planet of the solar system was not discovered until 
  5. 1781 by British astronomer Sir William Herschel. 
  6. Originally called Herschel (in honor of its 
  7. discoverer), the planet was renamed Uranus in the 
  8. 19th century. This bluish-green gas giant planet 
  9. revolves around the sun once every 84 years.
  10.    Uranus's discovery sent astrologers scrambling to 
  11. determine what significance the planet has in 
  12. creating astrological horoscopes. 
  13.    In Greek mythology, Uranus was the god of the 
  14. heavens and husband of the earth goddess, Gaea. 
  15. Uranus begat the Cyclopses and the Titans who (led 
  16. by Cronus) deposed and mutilated Uranus. Uranus's 
  17. blood fell to the Earth and from it came the three 
  18. Furies who avenge the crimes of patricide and lying.
